Fascinating Goan films to start tomorrow at 54th IFFI

The beauty of film festivals like IFFI is that they offer an eclectic array films from various corners of the country bringing together a mosaic of stories told in different languages. This year also IFFI offers a specially curated package of Goan films which will be unfurled from tomorrow at various venues of IFFI. The Goan package starts with the screening of Konkani film Gathan directed by Dinesh P. Bhonsle at INOX Screen-4, Panaji tomorrow (24.11.2023).

Here is a look at the films that are part of the Goan Films package and their scheduled timings:

 

1. Gathan

Director: Dinesh P. Bhonsle

Synopsis: A man named Kamlakar, who goes by the nickname Tatu, has a great relationship with his younger brother Babulgo. Despite their five-year age difference, they get along really well. Tatu works in the fishing industry, while Babulgo is settled in Mumbai. Tatu’s son, Sada, works for a local builder, while Babulgo’s daughter, Vedika, is married to an American man and works in America. Her marriage to an American is a source of pride for Tatu and the villagers. Babulgo plans a trip to Goa with the new couple to seek the blessings of the deity. Tatu makes all the necessary arrangements to make the couple feel comfortable at home, but they decide to stay in a hotel instead. Tatu is disappointed by this decision. Babulgo promises to visit Tatu for lunch along with the new couple. Despite his financial troubles, Tatu arranges a reception function by inviting neighbours and friends. On the scheduled day, Babulgo fails to show up. Sada tries to call him, but his phone is switched off. Tatu becomes worried as guests have gathered and are eagerly waiting to meet Babulgo and the new couple.

2. #MOG

Director: Nilesh Malkar

Synopsis: Lionel, an NRI Chef has to go back to Goa to deal with property matters after the death of his estranged father, who he holds mentally responsible for his mother’s death. The last thing on his mind is falling in love and that’s exactly what happens when he meets a bubbly Celina, who takes care of her dad’s bread delivery business. She and her sister were raised by their dad as their mom died years ago. Love blossoms between Celina and Lionel, but Celina’s dad holds a deep dark secret about her. His relative and closest friends try to get him to reveal the secret to Celina, but he hesitates. The truth hurts Celina deeply and she breaks up with Lionel. Will love win or will Lionel leave everything and go back to Canada?

3. Crazy Mogi

Director: Christ Silva

Synopsis: This film is about Arjun and Joaquim and how they overcome the obstacles in their love lives with the help of Roy. The film has humour but has a mature take on relationships. Throughout the movie, the characters discover a fresh perspective on love and life.

4. Maarwat

Director: Rajaram Gopal Turi

Synopsis:  The movie Maarwat delves into the subject of inter-caste marriage. It narrates the tale of two people who fall in love despite belonging to different castes. The female protagonist hails from a lower caste by the name of Mhar, which is famous for its bamboo handicrafts, an essential component of every wedding. The movie’s primary objective is to focus on the stereotypes and preconceived notions that are still prevalent in our society today.

5. Peace Lily Sand Castle

Director: Himanshu Singh

Synopsis: As they met to sign documents for the transfer of ownership of a flat, Janaki and Maanvi found themselves in a conversation that brought out some unexpected emotions. Maanvi, who is Joy’s ex-wife, took Janaki on an emotional journey, revealing glimpses of her past life through stories about her former home. Both women gained new insights and lessons about life during this heartfelt exchange.

6. The Witness

Director: Troy Ribeiro

Synopsis: The story takes place during the monsoon season in Goa and follows the life of Joaquim, a man in his seventies. Through a gripping psychological drama, the movie explores the theme of truth and how it can never be hidden for long. As Joaquim is faced with his past, he is forced to confront a secret that has been kept hidden away for years. The audience is left to ponder if the revelation will change the dynamics of his relationships.

7. Yashoda

Director: Praveen Chougule

Synopsis: Madhuri Ashirgade shares an inspiring story about Ishwaree, a mother who embodies the essence of humanity and celebrates motherhood. One day, Madhuri spotted Ishwaree with her two daughters, Sana and Shikha. Upon inquiry, Ishwaree revealed that she had legally adopted one of her daughters after the death of her beloved maid, Hansa. Yashoda, a short film based on this heartwarming tale, reminds us of the power of motherly love and compassion.
