Trekking Spots in Goa

Goa is known for its plentiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and serene backwaters, but if you look past the vast coastline and move inland, the state holds hidden treasures. For those who have a taste for adventure, or wish to explore Goa’s quieter, more natural side, here’s a list of trekking spots which open to stunning waterfalls and natural pools:

1. Bamanbudo Waterfall

Nestled in South Goa, Bamanbudo Waterfall offers a beginner experience for those looking to explore. From Panaji, travelers can take NH 66 to Gaodongren, and enjoy a short 20-minute route to the waterfall from the road. Those looking for a longer hike can approach the waterfall from the bus junction for a 45-minute walk along the forest trails. The terrain is moderate but it can be slippery, especially during the monsoon season. This spot is perfect for beginners and offers the soothing sounds of cascading water, surrounded by pristine greenery.

2. Sanvordem

For those looking for a more adventurous experience, Sanvordem is an ideal trekking destination. The trail leads you through an hour-long winding forest path to a breathtaking waterfall. To reach the trail from Panaji, drive along NH 748 toward Old Goa and continue to Valpoi. The trail starts at Omkar EcoHut, which offers parking facilities. The terrain is moderate, with a mix of flat and slightly inclined paths, perfect for travellers looking to expand their trekking horizon.

3. Barazan Waterfall

Surla is a hidden gem near the Goa border that presents a more challenging path for a breathtaking destination. This path is a two-for-one! About halfway up the hour-long trek, travellers arrive at the Barazan Waterfall, which is a stunning set of up to twelve waterfalls in the monsoon, pouring into a clear pool. Continuing upwards the trek leads to the top of the waterfall where the trekkers can cool off by swimming in the gorgeous pool that originates the fall. To reach this beautiful location from Panaji follow NH 748 towards Desai Nagar. The trail begins at Delta EcoHuts, where parking is available.

4. Tambdi Surla

Tambdi Surla is another amazing destination, for a moderately difficult trekking experience. This trail begins at the ancient 13th-century temple at Surla Village and lasts around 90 minutes. A guide is advisable for those venturing this path, as it takes you through dense lush forests. The end is absolutely worth the effort with the path leading to a 50-metre-tall waterfall. To reach this location take NH 748 from Panaji toward Old Goa, continuing to Surla Village.

5. Satrem Waterfall

For experienced trekkers seeking a longer and more challenging adventure, Satrem Waterfall is a must-visit. This trek takes you deep into the wilderness, with the sound of cascading water guiding you to your destination. The trek starts out fairly easy but progressively becomes more challenging, lasting 2 to 3 hours. The long path takes you through lush forests full of stunning biodiversity. The gruelling journey is rewarded with a majestic waterfall at its conclusion. The trail can be reached by driving along NH 748 toward Valpoi, followed by a 17 km journey to the waterfall.

All of these treks are most rewarding during the monsoon, but can be enjoyed year-round!
