A spark for young minds

In an effort to motivate and empower students and competitive exam aspirants, educationist and author Naguesh S. Sardessai has launched his book, ‘Select Essays’

A seasoned academic with over three decades of teaching experience, Sardessai brings both his scholarly insight and grassroots experience with students into his recent carefully curated collection of 15 thought-provoking essays.

Titled ‘Select Essays’, the book was formally released by principal of Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Manoj Kamat recently.

The book is meant to serve as a ready reckoner for students preparing for UPSC, GPSC, and other competitive exams. But its relevance doesn’t end there. “Students participating in elocution, debate competitions, and other academic forums will also benefit greatly,” says Sardessai.

Topics in this book range from abstract concepts like ‘Time Management’ and ‘There Is No Shortcut to Success’ to socio-political themes such as ‘Indian Republic @75’, ‘Global Warming’, ‘Digitalisation in India’, and ‘India – A New Space Power’.

What sets this book apart from others on the market, explains Sardessai, is its accessibility and contextual relevance, particularly for Goan youth. “Many books can be overwhelming for beginners. I’ve written this to be a starting point—something that builds their confidence and ignites a spark for reading and writing,” he says. The essays are designed to reflect national priorities and youth-centric themes, encouraging students to think critically about their country’s future as well as their own roles in shaping it.

One of the key challenges in writing, Sardessai notes, was simplifying complex topics without losing their depth. With declining reading habits and reliance on surface-level information, students today often lack both vocabulary and confidence to express themselves. “The dictionary used to be our best friend,” he quips, “but today it’s rarely opened.” He hopes the book will help rebuild that bridge to language, comprehension, and ultimately, powerful expression.

Beyond exam prep, ‘Select Essays’ aims to sharpen communication skills—a vital asset across professions. “Whether a student becomes a doctor, engineer, teacher, or entrepreneur, their ability to articulate clearly will always distinguish them,” says Sardessai. Drawing from his own experiences—having once aspired to civil services himself—he hopes to pass on not just content, but conviction.

What makes ‘Select Essays’ especially timely is its alignment with India’s broader developmental vision. Sardessai has carefully chosen topics that resonate with the country’s roadmap to 2047, when India marks 100 years of independence. “Today’s youth will be tomorrow’s policymakers, diplomats, and innovators,” he says. “We need to equip them not just with facts, but with perspective.” Essays on the National Education Policy, India’s emergence in global space exploration, and the role of youth in a digitised economy reflect this forward-looking ethos.

Sardessai also addressed the lack of awareness around central government career opportunities, particularly in Goa. Despite reservation benefits for OBC, ST, and other communities, representation in elite services like the IAS and IPS remains low. “It’s not about capability; it’s about exposure and preparation,” he explains. Through ‘Select Essays’, he hopes to bridge this gap, inspiring more Goan students to explore paths through UPSC and other national-level exams. The book encourages youth to dream bigger and aim higher, becoming leaders in both their communities and the nation.

With plans already in place for an expanded edition featuring 50 essays, Sardessai views this release as just the beginning. “The goal is not just to provide material, but to build a mindset. Once the reading habit is kindled, writing and critical thinking will follow,” he says.

‘Select Essays’ is now available in local bookstores and online platforms.
