Making students’ international goals easier

Bengaluru-based Edtech start-up Ambitio, India’s first AI admissions platform was founded to help applicants secure admissions in top global universities. Co-founders Dirghayu Kaushik and Vikrant Shivalik share more

Both of you are IIT BHU graduates. Dirghayu you worked with US-based start-up, TruckBook while Vikrant you were with Flipkart Grocery. What led you to leave these positions and start Ambitio?

After graduating from IIT BHU, we were thinking of pursuing an MS abroad. During the process, we realised that the entire process was very cumbersome and overwhelming. It was difficult to find the right set of courses and craft applications that stood out. All the information was scattered across the web. In addition, insights were confined to a handful of education counsellors. We thought of bringing the entire admissions process into one place and Ambitio was born in 2022.

What are the services Ambitio offers?

We make it 10 times easier for students to apply and get into top universities across the world. We help them right from profile building, and figuring out the right courses to writing stellar essays. All this can be done by the students themselves on our platform. Our platform is built from the insights of Ivy League students who have been through the process themselves and trained on more than 1.5 million student application data.

Along with this, we have in-house admission experts and a network of mentors who assist our students in their entire admission process.

We also have partnerships with Visa agents, accommodation providers, and other service providers to help students with loans, flights, Forex, etc.

In the last six months, Ambitio has generated revenue of 100K USD and also recently raised 200K USD in pre-seed funding. What makes Ambitio stand out from others offering similar services?

Our data-driven approach, keeping students at the centre makes us different from other service providers in the market. We don’t partner with universities, we partner with students to make sure they have the best shot at getting into top-ranked institutions. Our students have been accepted to universities like Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, UC Berkeley, Cornell University, U Penn, etc.

Our curated profile-building plans, personalised target shortlist, and nuanced feedback on the applications are from the platform that is trained with millions of data points to ensure transparency and give students the actionable assistance they need. The advice we give and the platform we have built are fuelled by the insights and expertise of those who’ve excelled at the world’s premier universities, ensuring benefit from genuine, firsthand experiences.

Additionally, with every new user we onboard, our platform becomes more intelligent, and all the insights and cross-feedback loops we leverage from our users make our product more robust.

Applying to global universities and getting accepted is not easy. What are some common issues our students face in this process?

It starts with figuring out the right set of courses to apply. There are hundreds of universities offering thousands of courses, with different eligibility criteria and career outcomes. Aligning them with a student’s preferences (location, research culture, ranking, ROI) can get tricky.

Even after having a final list of courses to apply for, working on the essays, getting LORs, and building a resume is a tiring process, Indian students are not typically accustomed to doing all this.

After getting admitted, they need to figure out finances, visa, and accommodation, and take care of a lot of documentation; even a small mistake can be costly.

We at Ambitio have a platform, which helps them make smart decisions quickly and stay on top of their admission process.

Studying abroad has long been a cherished aspiration for many Indian students and every year the numbers are increasing. What are the factors, in your opinion, driving this trend?

Students typically want to get global exposure, better research opportunities, and elevate their lifestyle. It’s highly competitive here in India to study in a tier 1 institution and very narrowed down on academic rigor. Students who wish to explore alternate career paths tend to move abroad. Today, students also want to study in a school that actually brings them closer to their goals.

What changes are needed in our education system to bring them on par with the US/UK universities?

We need to spend and double down on our research facilities by building research labs and grants for students to pursue novel research projects. Besides this, I think we need to change the way we evaluate students for admissions. We need to start looking beyond a test score and assess more holistically.

How do you plan on taking Ambitio forward?

We plan to increase our impact by helping more than 100K+ students make informed decisions and getting them into top institutions across the world. Additionally, we want to double down on more programmes – MBAs and undergraduate courses.
