FIFA World Cup 2018: Group A- Preview

With hardly less than two weeks remaining for the kick– off of the football extravaganza in Russia, NT–GoGoaNow brings you the preview of all the 32 teams that will be part of this year’s World Cup.

With World Cup regulars like Italy, Netherlands, United States of America, Chile, and Cameroon failing to qualify for this edition of World Cup, debutants like Iceland and Panama have pounced on this opportunity and booked their tickets to Russia. While we will also witness the returns of Egypt, Morocco, and Peru who are returning back to the scene after absences of at least two decades.

Group A – Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay

The two times World Cup champions–Uruguay who are pitted against Russia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia in the Group A are likely to clinch the top spot and are tipped to go far in the tournament. Considering the kind of firepower and experience ‘La Celeste’ have in the form of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani they are expected to make an easy work of their opponents.

The second spot might go in for a tussle between the host nation Russia and Pharaoh Nation of Egypt. Despite being the prolific goal scorer of the 2017/18 season for the English Premier League side Liverpool, the clouds of doubt are hovering over the chances of the Egyptian King – Mohamed Salah who suffered a shoulder injury following a challenge by Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the recently concluded UEFA Champions League final. But with the recent reports from Egypt FA suggesting that Salah should be fit to play some part at the World Cup have given the Egyptians some hope.

While the Russians who are banking on the home advantage and with players like Igor Akinfeev and Alan Dzagoev in their ranks, Russia will try to emulate in the footsteps of the 2002 host nation Korea, who finished 4th at the 2002 World Cup. On the other hand Saudi Arabia – the least ranked side in this group will try to fancy their chances and will be hoping for some sort of a miracle that might see them through the next round.
