Bagheera Kids, a new fun creative space for children, has just opened its doors

A deep passion for children’s literature and a belief in the power of stories and creative play to shape young minds led Jurate Nair, mother of an eight-year-old, to start Bagheera Kids in Sangolda. The space, which opened on August 25, offers after-school classes, workshops, and events aimed at making learning fun. It also includes a cafe and a library.

Excerpts of an interview with Nair:

What made you decide to begin Bagheera Kids? How long has this been in the planning?
Bagheera Kids was born out of a deep love for children’s literature and a passion for creating a nurturing space where kids can explore, learn, and grow. The idea started taking shape a few years ago, driven by a desire to offer something unique in Goa—a place that goes beyond just selling books. We wanted to create a hub that blends education, creativity, and community. The planning process took around two years, from conceptualising the idea to finding the right space, gathering resources, and curating our collection of books and toys.

How did you decide on the name Bagheera Kids?
The name ‘Bagheera’ is inspired by the beloved character from Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’. Bagheera, the wise and protective panther, symbolises guidance and care. Just as Bagheera guided Mowgli through the jungle, we hope to guide kids through their journey of learning and discovery in a fun, engaging, and safe environment.

How easy was it to find the ideal space for your venture?
It was definitely a challenge. We wanted a location that was easily accessible yet tucked away enough to provide a serene, cozy atmosphere. After an extensive search, we finally found the perfect spot in Sangolda. It’s a charming area surrounded by greenery that allows us to create a warm, inviting environment for children and their families.

What age group do you cater to?
We cater to children of all ages, from toddlers to teens. Our space is designed to offer something for everyone, whether it’s a baby exploring board books, a young child diving into an interactive storytelling session, or an older kid engaging in creative workshops. We will also have workshops and a cozy cafe where parents can relax, making it a space for the whole family.

Given that there are children’s spaces around Goa, why did you feel that a space like yours was needed?
While there are wonderful children’s spaces in Goa, we felt there was a need for a place that offers a more holistic experience. Bagheera Kids is not just a bookshop; it’s a creative and educational hub. We wanted to create a space where kids could explore their love for reading, engage in hands-on learning, and connect with others in a community-focused environment. The combination of a carefully curated selection of books, interactive sessions, ample indoor and outdoor space, and a cozy cafe sets us apart.

What has been some of the most memorable feedback since you began operations?
One of the most memorable feedback came from a parent who told us that their child had never been so excited about books until they visited Bagheera Kids. Another memorable moment was when a group of kids didn’t want to leave after one of our storytelling sessions. They were so engrossed and happy, which is exactly the kind of environment we wanted to create.

Going forward, what are some more ideas you plan to incorporate into this space?
We plan to expand our offerings by introducing more specialised workshops and classes tailored to different age groups and interests. We are also considering hosting community events such as book clubs, author visits, and themed story nights. Also, we aim to collaborate with educators and artists to bring more diverse learning experiences to Bagheera Kids, ensuring it remains a vibrant, evolving space for children and their families.
