FIFA WC 2018: GROUP E- PREVIEW

Group E– Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia

Brazil stands out as promising side from this group that also includes the Swiss, Costa Rica, and Serbia. The only question that arises here is which team will progress along with Brazil in the next round or might even pip Brazil for the top spot.

Brazil suffered an embarrassing 7–1 defeat at the hands of Germany in the semi-finals which was followed by a loss to the Netherlands for the 3rd place at the 2014 World Cup in their home country which sunk the spirit of the team as well as their fans. After taking over the coaching reins from Dunga, Tite has given the Brazilian team a rejuvenated look, a team that was placed 6th at one point during the World Cup qualifiers suddenly switched gears and qualified for the World Cup with 4 games to spare.

Neymar, who was nursing a metatarsal injury which he picked up while playing for PSG, came back on the international scene with a goal against Croatia in last week’s friendly match. An attack comprising of Neymar, Philippe Coutinho, Gabriel Jesus and Firmino has made the ‘Seleção’s’ serious contenders for the title.

The Swiss side which is ranked 6th in the FIFA ranking will fancy their chances to reach the round of 16 with Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City) and Garnit Xhaka (Arsenal) in their squad. While, Costa Rica who are being led by Real Madrid’s custodian Keylor Navas into this World Cup, will try to repeat the feat of 2014 World Cup, where they emerged as table toppers in a group featuring Uruguay, England, and Italy.

On the other hand, Serbians who are making their World Cup appearance after missing out the 2014 edition in Brazil will be highly banking on the trio of Milinkovic-Savic, Nemanja Matic, and Luka Milivojevic to guide them into the next group.
