3 Goan plays to be staged at the ‘8th Theatre Olympics’

The 8th edition of Theatre Olympics which will take place in India from February 18 will see 450 shows including 65 shows by international artistes, 600 ambient performances and 250 youth forum shows held in different parts of the country. This festival is organised by National School of Drama in collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Govt of India.

Disclosing this at a press conference on Friday, the Minister for Art and Culture, Govind Gaude said that, it is a moment of pride for Goa as 3 plays (2 nataks and 1 tiatr) will be staged as part of Theatre Olympics. Out of 4,000 entries from Indian productions, 3 Goan plays made the cut, he stated.

The 3 Goan plays that will be staged at the festival are; Blood Wedding, a Spanish play whose Konkani adaptation is done by Dr Prakash Vazrikar. The play depicts the cycle of life, the progression of time, choice, deception, fate and nature.

‘Oini Mith’ which is written by Menino Arajuo and directed by Jayendranath Haldankar showcases the issues of family planning, is the second drama from Goa to be staged.

‘Swapnavasavdatta’ a Sanskrit play, which is written by Mahakavi Bhasa and directed by Anagha Deshpande, and which portrays tender love, in both phases of union and separation and also speaks about the never ending conflict between duty and desire will also be staged.

He also mentioned that ‘Shambhu Raje Mahanatya’ a drama based on life story of Sambhaji Maharaja by Shree Bhagwati High School and ‘Gomantak Muktkata’, a play by V D and S V Wagle High School will be staged at Sanquelim, Goa college of Engineering, Ponda and Quepem Ground tentatively from April 26 till May 6. “Once the final dates out we are expecting around 10,000 people to attend this play,” concluded Gaude.
