Tizann (Goan porridge)

Tizann is a comforting traditional Goan porridge prepared with ragi (finger millet) or other grains, and flavoured with coconut milk and jaggery. Don’t be fooled, it’s more delicious than it sounds!

RECIPE

 Ingredients:

½ cup Ragi flour (finger millet flour)

2 cups of Water

1 cup Thick coconut milk (fresh or canned)

½ to ¾ cup Jaggery (grated)

½ tsp Cardamom powder

Pinch of salt

Cashew nuts or raisins for garnish (Optional)

Method:

  1. Mix the ragi flour with 1/2 cup of water in a bowl. Stir well to form a lump-free slurry.
  1. Bring the remaining 1.5 cups of water to a gentle boil. Slowly pour in the ragi slurry while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Then cook over low to medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
  1. Stir in the grated jaggery. Let it melt completely into the porridge. Taste and adjust the sweetness as needed.
  1. Pour in the thick coconut milk and stir well. Let it simmer on low heat for another 2-3 minutes. Don’t let it boil after adding coconut milk.
  1. Add cardamom powder and a pinch of salt. Mix well.
  1. Garnish with roasted cashew nuts or raisins if desired. Enjoy this comforting dessert warm or chilled!

Bonus Tip: Add a little ghee while roasting the ragi for a richer taste.
