The Kalarang festival will be held from October 12 to 16 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao

The Kalarang festival 2023 that aims to bring national talent to the Goan audience is back again with five days of events including two theatre performances. The festival will be held at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, from October 12 till 16 and is being organised by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, and the Kalangan Centre for Performing Arts, Margao.

The inaugural which will be done at the hands of film actress Padma Shri Asha Parekh with minister for art and culture Govind Gaude presiding over the ceremony. Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai will be the guests of honour.

Post this, at 7.30 p.m., Swarpradnya Pandit Milind Raikar known for playing in a unique ‘gayaki style’ consisting of melodious, soothing, and soulful tones will present ‘Colors of Violin’, a violin symphony orchestra. He is the first Indian violinist to receive the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, Italy, and to perform in ‘Bang On A Can’, New York. He has many albums to his credits such as ‘Guruvandana’ which was nominated for the GIMA 2015, Tranquility, and Milap to name a few.

 

Pandit Venkatesh Kumar known for his husky, vibrant classical singing style and best known for his rendition of devotional songs will present a vocal recital with Uday Kulkarni on tabla and Raya Korgaonkar on the harmonium on October 13, 6.30 p.m. Kumar was a faculty at the University College of Music, Dharward, for 33 years and has received many awards and titles including the Karnataka Sangeet Natya Academy Award (2007), Vatsala Bhimsen Joshi Award (2008), and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2012).
 

 

At 7.30 p.m, Smita Mahajan, Alka Lajmi, and the Kalangan troupe will present a Bharatanatyam recital called ‘Dvayam’. Somia Kartha Mridangam and Satish Krishnamurthy will be on the vocals while B. Anantharaman Nattuvangam and Sushmita Pednekar will be on the violin.

 

Sindhudurg musician Yogita Ulhas Raikar will present a vocal recital on October 14 at 6.30 p.m. Raikar won the first prize in Hindustani classical vocals at the 3rd Cultural Olympiad-2013, Dubai, and was also awarded the Late Aanand Ramachandra Limaye Buwa award.
 

 

At 7.30 p.m., there will be a Mohiniyattam recital titled ‘Sree Krishna Vaibhavam’ by Dr. Ayswaria Wariar and troupe. Wariar is a Mohiniyattam exponent, arts educator, researcher, actor and filmmaker. She has published a number of research papers and articles in prominent research journals and books. The recital will also feature Manimaran, Ilangovan, Wincy Fernandez, Manjima. P, and Sukanya Wariar as dancers, N. N. Sivaprasad Mridangam, Prajesh Nair Edakkya, and Mukundan Maraar on vocals, and Sreekumar Ramakrishnan on the flute.

The English play ‘Gauhar’ presented by The Primetime Theatre Co. Mumbai, with direction by Lillete Dubey will be staged on October 15, 7 p.m. The play tells the story of India’s first mass media superstar Gauhar Jaan who was also a gifted musician. The play lays bare her life with all its attendant myths, legends and folklore, as well as the times during which she lived and made exquisite music. The play stars Girija Oak, Neena Kulkarni, Denzil Smith, Danny Sura, Rajeev Siddhartha, Gillian Pinto, and Aakanksha Kadre.

On October 16, 7 p.m. the Marathi dance play ‘Lavanyavati’ will be presented by the Kali Billi Productions (KBP) Mumbai, with concept and design by Savitri Medhatul. The play is a performance devised in collaboration with Lavani and Tamasha artists and tells the journey of Maharashtra’s folk tradition lavani through the years and its evolution. The cast includes Akansha Kadam, Akshay Malvankar, Seema Pote, Sudhakar Pote, Savitri Medhatul, Sangeeta Panchal, Prakash Sanap, and Ajit Phondke.
