Remembering Wendell
Today would’ve been the 60th birthday of Wendell Rodricks, the late fashion designer who placed the state of Goa on the world’s fashion map. A child born in Bombay with a simple lifestyle grew up to be world-famous and meet many celebrities. He was an inspiration to many, especially aspiring fashion designers. Diwali Bonanza at Caculo Mall
Unique Creations is bringing in an exhibition titled, ‘Diwali Bonanza’. The exhibition will be held on the 12th and 13th of October at Caculo Mall, St Inez, Panjim. The exhibition will be selling various products suited for the festival of lights. Items like diyas, ethnic clothing, jewelry and much more will be put up for sale at very reasonable prices. The prices of products range from Rs. 100 to 500 for the jewelry, clothing ranges from 800 and above. There will be competitions held for women and children as well. A karaoke and lantern-making competition will be held for the children on the 12th of October. A mehendi competition will be held for the women on the 13th of October.
Fabric Collection by Manju Jalota
‘Fabric Collection’ by Manju Jalota, a clothing exhibition-cum-sale was recently held at Goa on the 10th and 11th of October 2019. The sale was held for two days at Margao and Panjim respectively. The sale exhibited different varieties of chikankari fabrics and clothing. The pricing of these fabrics is Rs. 2000 and higher. This brand hails from Lucknow and has been conducting these sales in Goa for the past 5 years. The exhibition is conducted all over India for years and has been seeing a good response. The sale is done directly through these exhibitions which cut out middle-men, part of the proceeds then go to the NGO. Speaking to Ritika, the owner of this brand, she commented saying, “The initiative was started by my mother, Manju Jalota about 25 years ago when she realized chikankari is a dying occupation in India. We’re here to try and keep the occupation alive. We are also part of an NGO which helps in empowering women across Lucknow. The NGO has about 5000 women under its wing, the revenue generated from these fabrics are distributed among these women. These women live about 50 km away from Lucknow.”
Diwali exhibition held at Panjim gymkhana
Disha Charitable Trust Panjim held its exhibition-cum-sale at Panjim Gymkhana. The exhibition was held on October 11, 2019. The products sold at this exhibition were made by intellectually disabled students. The exhibition showcased different products one could use this Diwali season. Diwali decorations such as diyas (lamps), paper bags, notebooks, jewelry were sold. The products were priced at nominal rates ranging from Rs. 100 and so on.

A mega event was held at Park Regis hotel by Kewal Kiran Clothing. They launched the booking for AW’19 (Autumn Winter) collection. A large display of fashion items was put up. It belonged to their leading brands- Killer, Integriti, LawmanPg3, Easies, and Desi Belle (women’s wear). Reviving Organic Clothing
Chennai-based social enterprise Tula introduced its conscious clothing line to Goa in a five-day exhibition that celebrated the artisanal Indian tradition of hand spinning, hand weaving, and natural dyeing of cotton. “Tula is an endeavour to make fellow citizens rethink their clothing choices. Just like the shift to organic food consumption, a shift to organic clothing of the kind that Tula represents will mean not just greater comfort and better clothing on your body – it is also about supporting many rural livelihoods. It is about the revival of traditional skills. It is about a different paradigm of sustainable living. Tula also focuses on reviving heirloom cotton seeds, to pull farmers out of the agrarian distress engulfing them,” said the founder of Tula and safe food activist, Ananthoo. “Tula is a not-for-profit clothing line that was set up in 2014. The customer can be sure that in this garment line, the largest proportion of revenue goes into supporting organic farmers, spinners, weavers, natural dyers, and tailors,” he added. Affordable wedding earrings collection launched by Puja Mapxencar
Puja Mapxencar, a fashion designer residing in Goa, recently launched an earrings wedding collection. All the earrings are handmade in India by craftsmen. The collection consists of long German silver hanging earrings & Jhumkas, temple jewellery, Bali’s, kundan jewellery, and gold plated American diamonds. The price range of the earrings is approximately between Rs.250 to Rs.700. Mapxencar says: “We have made it lightweight and cost friendly keeping in mind our customers’ requirements.” Each pair of earrings made is different and unique, therefore no one else will have the same pair. This jewellery is available at the Kandida boutique in Panaji and at 1930 Vasco. It’s not only for the bride but anyone going for the wedding, like the bride’s friends, can wear them. “Jewellery enhances the look even if the dress is simple,” Mapxencar states.
The Christmas season inspired handcrafted items at Natal Bazaar
Museum of Goa in collaboration with CraftStories organised a Natal bazaar during the Christmas season. They sold a variety of items which well-suited the festive season. Some of these items included cakes, handmade flowers, artificial jewellery, lamps, bags, food items, candles, and more. People got to put their creativity on display through various handcrafted products. Along with the bazaar, there were other fun-filled activities such as a carol singing competition, face-painting, drawing competition, etc. Christmas themed workshops were held as well where people of all ages learnt and enjoyed. Some of the stalls belonged to Monica’s gift shop, Kitsch bits, Craftstories, Raika, Nazaaqaut, Soul potion, Feelings and others.

Keventers eyeing for expansion in the state
Indian dairy franchise, Keventers, which has around 230 outlets in nearly 50 locations around the country have also have landed on the shores of Goa recently by opening its first Keventers outlet at MG Road in Panaji, followed by another one in Tito’s lane at Baga. Boasting with a wide variety of milk beverages– from classic milk shakes to fruity shakes and after getting a good response from both the outlets in Goa, the company is now geared up to launch 11 more outlets by the end of 2019 in the state and sees Goa as a prominent market for the brand. The expected new outlets in the state will come up in locations such as – Candolim, Calangute, Vagator, Margao, Vasco, Porvorim, Colva, and Damolim airport and in the malls. Cottonfab 2018- Exhibition of Cotton and Silk
Kala Academy is currently holding ‘Cottonfab-2018’ which is a big exhibition of Cotton and Silk. It will end on 3rd April 2018. Many stalls are set up which are filled with different Indian handloom products. There are various saris, silks and cotton items. Other clothing items are available like dress material, kurties, and salwar-kameez. The exhibition is also selling home furnishing items, bangles, earrings, wallets, footwear, and eatables. National Silk Expo Inaugrated
The ‘National Silk Expo’ which was inaugurated on March 21 at Community Centre, Taleigao features the works of artisans from all over India of the Gramin Hastkala Vikas Samiti, who have come to Goa to exhibit their ethnic weaves and traditional pure silk and cotton products. The exhibition was inaugurated at the hands of renowned celebrity from Goa, Samiksha Dessai. The Organizer of National Silk Expo, Jayesh Kumar Gupta said that the main social objective of the handloom exhibition is to promote weavers and encourage them and provide a market to the handloom industry. More than 100 designers and weavers are part of this year’s exhibition which includes designer clothes from each region of the country; the exhibition treats the consumers with a kaleidoscope of India’s colorful diversity and talent. Artisans from 14 handloom weaving States including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat , Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal and many other designers from metros working in collaboration with the weavers are displaying more than 1,50,000 variety of their work here. A Mirror of Everyday Life- Drawing exhibition
The Museum of Goa (MOG) is currently holding an exhibition called ‘A Mirror of Everyday Life’ which showcases Saleh Kazemi’s drawings. He is an Iranian artist settled in Rome and has lately been travelling around Goa, artistically recording what he has seen. The display also includes other works by Saleh, such as self-portraits and a series called Moments in Waiting. Saleh Kazemi had first taken up documentary photography but later on distanced himself from technology which led him to the drawing board. He loves to travel and capture what he sees every day. The drawings at the exhibition show everyday scenes from different places. Various scenes from Goa were depicted like women sellers in local markets, barbershops, cows, banyan trees, etc. He also drew the local life of Rome which portrayed bus journeys, shops, café life, kitchens, and so on. Two Fashion designers from IFW talk about their collections
The International Fashion Week 2018 at Taj Vivanta provided a platform for two fashion designers from Goa – Puja Mapxencar and Philu Martins. Puja Mapxencar exhibited her summer/spring collection for men, which were inspired by Weaves of Ikat. This collection was dedicated to the Orissa Weavers who earn their living by creating masterpieces. Ten ensembles were showcased, which had a vibrant colourful Western Indo style for casual wear as well as occasions. The showstopper was a Bollywood and Goan actor, Kevin D’mello, who wore a stylish blazer made with Ikat fabric. Philu Martins’ collection was inspired by the Indian sunbird in many ways. She feels that the women of today are like the sunbird – elegant, hardworking, free, and happy. Apart from being colourful, the fabric and style were soft, drapey, fluid, and flirty. Her aim for this collection was to make perfect resort wear for women to feel confident and stylish.
Fashion designers leave their mark at The International Fashion Week 2018
The third edition of International Fashion Week by Wild Orchid Entertainments was held at a city hotel from March 2 to March 4. Various works of fashion designers were showcased during the event, which included western, Indo-western, menswear, spring/ summer collection designs. Some students presented different sari drapes of India. The designers who participated in the fashion event were Naveen Pradeep, Mohan Gowda, Madhu Verma, Puja Mapxencar, Anushka Shaikh, Philu Martins and other upcoming designers. Many fashion items including jewellery, silk clothes, Kashmiri printed saris, etc, were on also sale. Seminars, master classes, workshops, and talk shows were also held during the three-day event. The proceeds from the event would go in support of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ mission.
Pretty Home exhibition- A one stop shopping experience
The ‘Pretty Home’ exhibition- one of Goa’s popular exhibition brands- is going on at Don Bosco high school, Panjim. It started on February 15th and will end on February 19th. They had a wide variety of products under different categories. There are many electronic items like ovens, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, lighting equipment, and washing machines. Fashion products were everywhere like makeup, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, shoes, rings, bags, dresses, sarees, pants, and much more. Useful home items like carpets, wallpaper, furniture, water coolers, decorative pieces, and so on were available. The exhibition also had cameras, gym equipment, books, healthcare products, and other items.
