India’s Jazz Festival is back in Goa this year
The Jazz India Circuit (JIC) is all set to come to Goa on November 30th and December 1st at the International Centre Goa (ICG) Dona Paula. The JIC is a one-stop destination to hear the newest and most diverse jazz acts. The event is organized by Teamwork Arts and has a stellar line-up of jazz artists. Other than that a series of music workshops, interactive experiential spaces, a bustling flea market, and a vibrant food court with flavors from all over the globe and a feast of art and craft activities. Speaking about the Goa leg of JIC 2019, Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, said, “The JIC celebrates the best of contemporary jazz bringing new idioms and the innovative spirit of jazz to the forefront for Indian audiences. Mayem Lake has now been made more tourist- friendly
Dr. Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, inaugurated the beautification and up-gradation works undertaken at Mayem Lake on 27th August 2019. He also launched the Bungee Jumping Site there. Mayem Lake is a famous tourist spot for boating or just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The works undertaken include the development of approach road and parking area for around 57 cars, 40 two-wheelers and 10 tourist buses with a 12m wide approach road. A ticketing booth and tourist information office has been put up at the entrance. The walkway lets the differently-abled move around freely. There is a natural trail, where people can feel and experience the lake view and natural beauty. The existing lake retaining wall and parapet has also been strengthened. Picnic spots have also been developed. Children can enjoy in the play area with swings, see-saw, slopes, etc. To add to the fun, there is now an air-conditioned mirror maze, a duck house, and an amphitheatre (with a capacity for 120 people which can be increased to 200) for showcasing the local folk and cultural dances. GoaMiles is now Goa government’s licensed app based taxi service
The State Transport Authority under the Department of Transport, Govt. of Goa has granted approval for operations of GoaMiles app-based taxi service in accordance with the Guidelines for App Taxi operators in the State. This approval from the Goa Transport Department now makes GoaMiles the state-run app-based taxi service and throws open its doors for all categories of registered vehicles to sign up and boost the State’ first and only app-based taxi service – GoaMiles. Following this approval, the aggregator can now aggregate taxis in the category of AGT(All Goa Tourist), Yellow black taxis and AITP taxis, Yellow Black Motorcycles, Rent a Cab, Rent a Bike etc as per the guidelines formulated by STA. Goa has around 30,000 registered tourist taxis operating across the State. GoaMiles which was launched last year by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation has already achieved success and had been appealing to local tourist operators to join the new service which has proven beneficial to the hundreds of taxi operators already in service with GoaMiles. An eco-farm with thrills and adventure for the first time in Goa
For the first time in Goa, an eco-farm will be opening which consists of more than just a farm or spice plantations. People can come here and admire the farm and get thrills as well. The construction of SharvRaj Eco-farm at Padoshe Sanquelim in Sattari taluka will be in five phases. The first phase will be inaugurated on 9th March 2019 at 4 pm. It will be open to the public from 10th March 2019 onwards. The first phase is built in an area of 10 acres. The farm consists of horticulture, rainwater harvesting, vegetable cultivation, borewell recharge, different types of irrigation methods, medicinal herbs, water management, organic fertilizers, and more. Folk festival- Lokotsav 2019- will begin on 11th January ’19
Lokotsav 2019 (folk festival) will be bringing a flood of handicraft items to Kala Academy from 11th to 20th January 2019. It is organised by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa, in collaboration with the West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur, Sports Authority of Goa, and others. This is the 20th edition of the festival. There will be more than 500 stalls which will sell items like carpets, clay art, furniture, block print, bandhani, handmade garments, slippers, leather bags, khadi, wooden toys, and Goan crafts. The inaugural function will take place on 11th January 2019 at 6:30 pm followed by a cultural programme which will continue till 9:30 pm. During the festival, there will be performances every day. There are more than 500 folk artists who will entertain the audience. The performances include various types of folk dances and music. Additionally, traditional food items of different states like Rajasthan will be available for tasting. (The timings of the festival are from 10 am to 10 pm.)

This event definitely contributes to the Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission ‘Streeshakti’ (woman empowerment). Goa gets it’s first pictorial cancellation
The department of posts, on the occasion of National Philately Day, launched the first pictorial cancellation of Goa which will feature the sculpture of Saint Meerabai, which is found in the village of Loutolim. The department launched this pictorial cancellation as part of National Postal Week that is being observed from October 9-15. The sculpture of Saint Meerabai, which can be seen in the village of Loutolim, is the work of sculpturist, Mahendra Alvares. The sculpture has entered six record books, including Limca book of records for being the fastest and longest laterite sculpture done single-handedly. This pictorial cancellation will be used at the Loutolim post office, to cancel the letters posted in a specified letterbox. Dr N Vinodkumar, postmaster general, Goa region, said that: “stamps maybe a piece of paper for a common man, but for a philatelist it is a piece of art, cause these stamps are studded with miniature paintings based on various themes.” Vinodkumar also urged the younger generation to take up philately and open ‘Philatelic Deposit Account’, which will not only add a dimension to one’s hobby but also will enhance them with more knowledge. INSV Tarini returns after circumnavigating the globe
After sailing around the globe for 254 days, spending 194 days at sea and covering a distance of 21,600 nautical miles the all-women crew onboard INSV Tarini on Monday returned to Goa. The expedition ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’ the first-ever Indian circumnavigation on an Indian-built sailboat, INSV Tarini, aimed at promoting women empowerment aligned with the Government of India’s thrust for ‘Nari Shakti’ led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi. The expedition began on September 10, 2017, visiting five countries and en route touching four continents, crossing three oceans, three major capes – Leeuwin, Horn and Good Hope– and crossed the Equator twice before reaching INS Mandovi boat pool at Verem. The other crewmembers include Lieutenant Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lieutenant Aishwarya Boddapati, Lieutenant Patarapalli Swathi, Lieutenant Sh Vijaya Devi and Lieutenant Payal Gupta. The expedition was completed in five legs– Leg I (Goa– Fremantle, Australia), Leg II (Fremantle – Lyttelton), Leg III (Lyttelton– Falkland), Leg IV (Falkland– Cape Town), Leg V (Cape Town– Goa) which covered over 21,600 nautical miles. Economic Development Corporation unveils three installations at Patto Plaza
EDC Ltd. which has developed the Patto Plaza, the commercial hub of Goa, has taken up the beautification of the Plaza. As a part of this beautification project and an initiative of Department of Art and Culture, Government of Goa, EDC Ltd. have installed 3 sculptures at prominent locations at the EDC Patto Plaza Complex. The unveiling of these sculptures was done on April 30 by Minister for Art and Culture, Govind Gaude, Chairman of EDC– Sidharth Kuncaliker and other officials. The ‘Balancing Figure’ which is designed by Bisaji Gadekar is installed near the Sesa Ghor, the ‘Women Empowerment’ sculpture designed by Mahendra Potdar is installed at the Patto circle and the sculpture depicting ‘Digital Education’ which is designed by Verodina D’souza is installed near the EDC Ltd. site. Vintage Car and Bike Festival – Going Back in Time !
The annual one-day Vintage Bike and Car Festival which is organized by Goa Tourism to promote the passion for restoring and maintaining vintage bikes and cars will be held on April 29 at the INOX courtyard, Panaji. Goa Tourism Development Corporation Chairman, Nilesh Cabral, who flagged off the Vintage Bike and Car rally said that it gives immense pleasure to see a huge number of participants not only from Goa but also from other states and to get a glimpse of their prized possessions. Further, Cabral also said that, since these vintage automobiles are quite difficult to maintain, he will put forth a proposal in front of the Government which will allow an insurance subsidy for these vintage automobiles. The Grape Escapade Festival Gets Underway
The 14th edition of the wine festival – The Grape Escapade was inaugurated on April 19 at D. B Bandodkar grounds, Campal, Panaji. Speaking at the inaugural of the festival, Minister for Tourism and Sports, Babu Aajgaonkar said that, local wineries should see this wine festival not from the entertainment point of view but also from research point on which can help them to compete in the international market. He also said that they are not just promoting cashew but also keen on promoting wine and like the cashew having its medicinal properties, the wineries should be looking to bring those out of their produce. Colva Beach selected by Ministry of Tourism under the ‘Iconic Tourist Sites Development Project’
Colva beach, South Goa’s most popular shore is all set for development under Govt. of India’s Iconic Tourist Sites project and is slated to not only boost beach tourism but up the profile of the local area along with community development. Colva will be e India’s only beach which will be covered under this project along with 11 other tourist locations across the country which have been identified by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. Employment generation, development of the local culture, occupations, beautification, infrastructure, provision of facilities, public amenities are some of the key objectives of the initiative. On April 7, Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India, chaired a high level meeting with all key officials from the Govt. of Goa and Goa Tourism at the Paryatan Bhavan, Panjim where details were unfolded on the Govt. of India’s Iconic Tourist Sites Development Project for Colva beach. Stakeholders from Colva including representatives on behalf of local MLA of Benaulim who attended the meeting stressed on the need for measures to be stepped up with regards to cleanliness and hygiene, parking, garbage collection, regulation of water sports activities, shacks, sewerage and several environmental issues.
Spirit of Goa Festival gets underway
Goa Tourism unveiled-‘The Spirit of Goa Festival 2018’ at the D B Bandodkar Ground, Campal, Panjim. The three day festival which will span over three days from April 6-8, was inaugurated by Manohar Ajgaonkar, Minister for Tourism, Nilesh Cabral, Chairman of GTDC and other officials. The three day event is themed on Goa’s drupe fruits–Coconut and Cashew, wherein a variety of products, cuisine, beverages, handicrafts and others showcasing the traditional aspects and the goodness associated with this produce. The festival will also feature live demo’s on distilling of cashew and coconut juice into relished heritage brew of ‘Feni’. Besides these, authentic Goan food, involving coconut and cashew will as the key ingredients in the cuisine and beverages will be prepared and served during the three-day festival. Minster for power and social welfare and chairman of Goa State Yoga Academy, Pandurang Madkaikar said that the academy will bring together yoga teachers, who have been imparting yoga education and conducting class in their individual capacities. “The academy will be a hub for yoga teachers from across Goa as members of the academy. Besides, it will also serve as a platform for all yoga teachers to contribute and enhance the yoga scene in the state,” he said addressing media. Madkaikar also said that the objective of the academy will not only to teach yoga but also to impart ethics, etiquettes and cultural values in the younger generations. “We aim to establish social responsibility among the students and to community as a whole,” he said. He said that there was a proposal to conduct yoga classes in the precinct of Kala Academy on permanent basis and that the head office of yoga academy would be either Panaji or Porvorim. We also have plans to have at least one centre in each of the 40 constituencies of Goa, said Madkaikar. The Goa State Yoga Academy will be inaugurated on March 18 at Black Box, Kala Academy, Panaji at 11 a.m.
State to witness light rainfall
The state will witnesses light rainfall due to cloudiness in the region with day to remain cooler and night warmer. According to IMD the temperature in the state has been fluctuating in the past few days owing to drizzle in pockets. A predominantly overcast sky and subsequent rise in humidity levels have led to a shift in the weather, especially the temperature at night. They said the change in weather was because of weak trough extending from Maldives to eastern Arabian Sea as a result confluence of moisture from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in middle atmospheric level move towards the northern part of the country. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature remains below normal around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature remained one notch above normal at 21.8 degrees Celsius. Though the weather forecast agency ruled out the possibility of heavy rainfall, they said isolated places were likely to experience rain in spells. “It is unexpected weather condition. Public Toilets in state being geotagged by GSUDA
In a bid to keep the state open defecation free, the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) is carrying out mapping and geo-tagging of public toilets to make them more accessible for citizens to help locate public toilets in the state at the tip of their fingers. Residents and tourists will soon be able to locate washrooms near them at their fingertips with the help of Google map. About 360 public toilets besides those located at petrol pumps, railway stations and bus stands, are being can be located on the service. Google Maps will provide information on public toilets in across the state. Toilets can be located not just through the app on mobile phones (Android and iOS), but on desktop computers as well. Nothing could be more embarrassing for a globally-recognised tourist destination – Goa – to realise that none of its villages or urban areas have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) under the Centre’s ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission. Govt aiming at seven-star rating for Panaji: Parrikar
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, on Friday, said that the government will start its efforts to attain seven-star rating for Panaji city, right from the Boca de Vaca (Mouth of the Cow) spring touristic spot, under the ‘Protocol for Star Rating of Garbage-Free Cities: The Chief Minister, who was speaking after inauguration of the renovated and upgraded spring tun-nel and surrounding are-as at the city Boca de Vaca spring, said that the department of tourism will make all efforts to publicise the location as a touristic spot through its website as a large number of tourists come to visit the beautiful spring tunnel. Parrikar further said that by March 2018, the spot will be provided with various kiosks operated by the neighborhood locals, however, its cleanliness and aesthetics would not be compromised at any cost. “They can earn their livelihood from this place, but should not forget that belongingness is a very important part of this project,- he noted. Operator dies as jet-ski crashes into Dona Paula jetty
A 50-year-old Jet-ski operator died after his Jet-ski crashed into the jetty at Dona Paula on Wednesday evening. The deceased has been identified as Devendra Bhosle, a resident of Betim. Police said that the incident was reported at around 4.30 pm. Bhosle lost control over the Jet-ski and dashed against the Jetty, police said adding he succumbed to the injuries.
