Deciphering cricket with Boria Majumdar
Sports journalist, sports commentator, and author of several books on Indian sports, Boria Majumdar was in Goa for the 2019 edition of Goafest. NT GoGoaNow caught up with Boria to talk cricket. AUSTIN DIAS | NT GoGoaNow This year’s IPL has seen matches go on till midnight. The slow over rates are affecting fans and journalists. Comment The most important constituency of the game is its fans. If a fan has to struggle to return home at 1 a.m. in the morning by paying four times the money for transport, if a journalist cannot write the match report as the deadline is over and his morning edition is gone, and the broadcaster cannot sell his inventory, it is unfair on them. Firstly, the BCCI has to play a greater role. There are two things that can be done. You can start matches at 7 p.m. and finish by 11.30 p.m. Secondly, penalising the erring captain on the basis of net run rate (NRR). If the penalisation is done by cutting down match fees the franchise will pay it off. If you want to hurt them use the NRR (net run rate) option. Eventually, when it comes down to the […]
Strive for Consistency: Mary Kom
To win a world championship once is no mean feat, but to win it six times is a herculean task. A testament to resilience, humility and empowerment six times World Amateur Boxing Champion Mary Kom was in conversation with sports journalist Boria Majumdar. Mary Kom opened up about her early life and her induction into boxing, the societal outlook towards women’s boxing, infrastructural challenges that she faced, etc. However, she spoke about how she kept at it without losing focus. Speaking of resilience and perseverance, Mary said, “Being a girl, it’s very difficult as women’s boxing is not introduced nationally as a sport. As a child, I used to get inspired by action movies of Jackie Chan and Akshay Kumar and always believed that if men can then why can’t women?” Speaking about the boxing scenario in India, Mary feels nothing has much change in the sport. “It is still the same. I am the same, boxing is the same. In the last seven years things have changed there have been facilities but what I see is that we don’t have champions. Only we have one two champions for so many years, there aren’t any new champions. I am not […]
When India and Pakistan play a match, it is nothing less than a war: Sehwag
Speaking on the Day 2 of Goafest 2019, Sehwag was asked if India should play Pakistan in the World Cup, he said, “There are two things which are discussed, whether we should have a war with Pakistan or not and whether we should play Pakistan in the upcoming world cup or not.” “We should do whatever is good for the nations prospect. When India and Pakistan play a match, it is nothing less than a war. We should win it and not lose it.” added Sehwag. When asked questions about the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, Sehwag replied that “I feel a leader should have the courage to take decisions, quick decisions in the interest of the country, in the interest of the Army and the interest of the police.” He also said that if people started voting for leaders and not on the basis of party lines, then “half the leaders” would not get elected.”The leaders get elected because people vote for the party. The person who can take decisions should get elected, irrespective of which party he is from,” he claimed. Ending the session on a humorous note, when asked if he intended to join politics, Sehwag replied, “I […]

Yoga: For a Better Living…
With people from various walks of life adopting yoga as a route to a fitter life; Yoga– the age-old Indian practice of physical exercise has garnered a lot of popularity. Since the inception of the ‘International World Yoga Day’ on June 21, 2015, the art of yoga has touched the shores of all the continents. In this world of high paced lifestyle, people see yoga as an alternative to the world of the gym, as yoga not only provides the relaxation time to the muscles but also vitalises the mental health along with the good facilitation of the internal organs. The date– June 21 was recommended to mark the International Yoga Day since it marks the longest day in the northern hemisphere and many believe that it marks the day that Lord Shiva – one of the Hindu Trinity, began imparting yoga to his followers and became its first guru. Since the inclusion of Yoga into the UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2016, India’s elusive cultural heritage finds expression in the ideas, practices, beliefs, and values shared by communities across various countries. VAR: Clarity or Confusion
In its 88 years of journey, the FIFA World Cup has undergone many changes; be it the introduction of colored (yellow and red) cautionary cards in 1970 (Mexico), Penalty shootouts in 1978(Argentina), the goal line technology in 2014 (Brazil) or the recent one– the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in 2018 (Russia). The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) whose debut we will see at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in Russia, was previously used in 2017 Confederations Cup, Serie A, Bundesliga, MLS and at the FA Cup on a trial basis. The introduction of VAR has been quite a debatable issue and has raised some eyebrows in the football fraternity. NTGoGoaNow elaborates the working procedure of the VAR and people’s views on the introduction of VAR on the grandest stage. What is VAR?The Video Assistant Referee is a group of officials who are watching the game away from the stadium and has access to every camera angle and also the goal-line technology cameras. When is the VAR used by the on-field referee? The VAR assists the on-field referee in taking decisions such as: awarding a goal, penalty decisions, direct red card incidents and in the cases of mistaken identity– where […]
FIFA WC 2018: GROUP E- PREVIEW
Group E– Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia Brazil stands out as promising side from this group that also includes the Swiss, Costa Rica, and Serbia. The only question that arises here is which team will progress along with Brazil in the next round or might even pip Brazil for the top spot. Brazil suffered an embarrassing 7–1 defeat at the hands of Germany in the semi-finals which was followed by a loss to the Netherlands for the 3rd place at the 2014 World Cup in their home country which sunk the spirit of the team as well as their fans. After taking over the coaching reins from Dunga, Tite has given the Brazilian team a rejuvenated look, a team that was placed 6th at one point during the World Cup qualifiers suddenly switched gears and qualified for the World Cup with 4 games to spare. Neymar, who was nursing a metatarsal injury which he picked up while playing for PSG, came back on the international scene with a goal against Croatia in last week’s friendly match. An attack comprising of Neymar, Philippe Coutinho, Gabriel Jesus and Firmino has made the ‘Seleção’s’ serious contenders for the title. The Swiss side which is […]
FIFA WC 2018: Group D- Preview
Group D- Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria Well, this is where it starts getting interesting yet complicated. Argentina, Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria, a group with a lot to offer in terms of their football style and tales of emotions involved in a build-up to the fixtures of this group. With the kind of matches lined up in this group, even the predictions made by football pundits ahead of the start of World Cup might even go wrong. A Mario Gotze winner in the extra time of the 2014 WC final in Brazil prolonged the Argentinean dream of their 3rd World Cup title much further. To add more misery to the World Cup final loss against Germany, Chile inflicted Argentina with two consecutive finale losses in La Copa America and a series of failures to clinch the titles also pushed Lionel Messi into brief retirement. If it was not for Messi’s hat-trick against Ecuador in their last World Cup qualifier game, Argentina would have missed the flight to Russia. A forward line which includes Paulo Dybala, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain should propel ‘La Albiceleste’ into next round. With Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria breathing down their neck and mediocre show […]
FIFA WC 2018: Group C- Preview
Group C– France, Peru, Denmark, Australia Didier Deschamps who captained France to World Cup glory in 1998 will be looking to add another star on the crest. After missing out on the Euro 2016 title, where France ended up as runner-ups, Deschamps will be eager to better out the World Cup prospects of France come June 14. Pitted in group C alongside Peru, Denmark, and Australia, France starts out as clear favorites. Top players such as Manchester United’s– Anthony Martial, Arsenal’s –Alexandre Lacazette and Real Madrid’s– Karim Benzema failed to make into Deschamps 23-man World Cup squad. If France is to go the distance in this World Cup than the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, and Kylian Mbappe will have to go all guns blazing up-front. With an all-around performance in their 3-1 win over Italy in a friendly encounter last week and with Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Samuel Umitti getting on the score sheet, the ‘Les Bleus’ showed why they are tipped as one of the tournament favorites. With France likely to take the top stop, the competition will intensify with Peru and Denmark vying for the second spot in the group. The Peru National team hit […]
FIFA WC 2018: Group B- Preview
Group B – Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran 2010 World Cup Champions–Spain, in an attempt to defend their crown bowed out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil at the group stage as the Netherlands ran riot over them in the first game and later on Chile guided them to the exit door. Following their exit in the 2016 Euro Cup at the quarter-final stage saw Vicente Del Bosque stepping downs as their coach. With Julen Lopetegui taking over the reins, has injected the 2018 Spanish World Cup squad with a boost of youth-centric players such as Isco, Asensio, and Thiago who will be backed by the core of– Ramos, Pique, Busquets, Iniesta, and Silva. However, the likes of Marcos Alonso, Alvaro Morata and Cesc Fabregas who won the FA Cup with Chelsea and Ander Herrera along with Hector Bellerin couldn’t find a place for them in Lopetegui’s squad. Diego Costa looks like a sure starter in the playing XI alongside Valencia striker –Rodrigo and with English Premier League’s 2017/18 season Golden Glove award winner – David De Gea in the goal should see the ‘La Roja’ safely into the next round. Sharing the group with Spain are the 2016 Euro […]

While we will also witness the returns of Egypt, Morocco, and Peru who are returning back to the scene after absences of at least two decades. Group A – Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay The two times World Cup champions–Uruguay who are pitted against Russia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia in the Group A are likely to clinch the top spot and are tipped to go far in the tournament. Considering the kind of firepower and experience ‘La Celeste’ have in the form of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani they are expected to make an easy work of their opponents. The second spot might go in for a tussle between the host nation Russia and Pharaoh Nation of Egypt. Despite being the prolific goal scorer of […]
