At this week’s MOG SUNDAYS, Kaustubh Naik, currently a research scholar at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU, will talk about two distinct theatre cultures in Goa – Tiatr and the Aitihasik Natak (plays based on historical themes) that remain popular among Goan masses, Catholic and Hindus respectively. MOG SUNDAYS are held at the Museum of Goa from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, every Sunday. Entry is free and open to all. Tiatr is a thriving popular form of theatre among Goan Catholic communities and one that has consistently reinvented itself to remain a radical form of political theatre. The Aitihasik Natak is a genre of Marathi plays based on the life and times of Maratha rulers, Shivaji and Sambhaji, that were quite popular in Goa throughout the twentieth century. Through comparative analysis of both these genres, this talk will attempt to understand broader cultural patterns that continue to inform Goa’s political landscape. Kaustubh Naik has an MA in Performance Studies from Ambedkar University Delhi. He was named the DD Kossambi Fellow by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Govt of Goa for the period 2016-18. His op-eds on politics and culture have been published in The Goan, The […]

William Wyler was one of the Hollywood greats – prolific, consistent, exacting and versatile.  He was nominated for 12 Oscars for directing and won thrice. His most celebrated classics are Ben Hur, Roman Holiday and The Heiress.  He completely devoted his craft to the storytelling and never let his “style” overcome the story or the characters. Perhaps that’s why he’s not as revered or studied as his peers today. Over two weeks Sunaparanta will re-visit 7 of his “lesser greats”, the films that are as good if not better than his best films but less fortunate in that they are less remembered. Join us for two weeks of the ‘great and under-rated’ Wyler this September at Sunaparanta.
