BITS Pilani in collaboration with IHE Delft, Netherlands has launched a new ME programme in Sanitation Science, Technology and Management for this academic year.

The research track programme entails that the student pursues two semesters of coursework, initiates his/her ME dissertation in the third semester (concurrent with remaining coursework), while the fourth semester will be entirely allocated for pursuing the dissertation. The curriculum will focus on on-field best practice aspects to impart skills to the students. The programme will be run at BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa campus and the degree will be awarded by BITS Pilani.

BITS Pilani has been recently recognised as Institute of Eminence by MHRD, Government of India. It is also India’s highest ranked non-Government Institute as declared in various reputed world rankings of 2019 such as QS BRICS, QS Asia, and QS India.
This programme, in collaboration with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Netherlands is part of the Global Sanitation Graduate school.

In partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IHE Delft launched the new programme in sanitation. The Delft-based postgraduate programme in Sanitation was then made available to universities in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa as part of the recently established Global Sanitation Graduate School. BITS Pilani has been recognised as a sub-grantee of this agreement among a selected few across the globe.

Why this programme?
In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established a set of 17 goals that need to be achieved by the year 2030, namely the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 6 focusses on water and sanitation and it is high on the Indian Government’s agenda as evident under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan mission. According to the International Water Association (IWA), an association of water professionals around the world, strengthening professional capacity in water and sanitation is of utmost importance. According to research in 2014, there is an immense need to attract, educate, train and professionally update sanitation professionals to reach universal coverage in low- and middle-income countries.

The focus of this interdisciplinary programme is on the delivery of non-sewered sanitation services to urban communities in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The course seeks women and men from diverse backgrounds in acknowledgement of the diversity and complexity of challenges in urban sanitation worldwide. The Delft-based Master of Science in Sanitation is currently the only graduate program entirely dedicated to non-sewered sanitation.

Admissions will be made on the basis of marks obtained in the BITS HD admission test or based on GATE/GPAT scores. The last date to apply online: April 30, 2019
