Green achievers

The Botanical Society of Goa organised the 30th annual home garden competition to promote the love of plants and organic cultivation of vegetables in Goa.

This year, the competition was held in a hybrid format and invited interested participants to share video clips of their garden. A total of 25 gardens were shortlisted and visited.

In the home garden (ornamental, fruit, and vegetable plants) on the ground category, the first place was won by Maria Lilia Pinto of Candolim, the second place was won by Calvin D’Souza of Corjuem, while the third place was won by Vanessa Pinto of Betim.

The Prisca Martins Memorial Award for innovative gardening was won by Juliet and Eleuterio Carneiro of Navelim, who won the first prize last year, and who transformed their garden into an agro-ecological homestead including poultry and goats this year.

In the terrace garden category, the first place was won by Jai Naik of Borda-Margao, the second place was won by Adil Ghadiali of Chicalim, while the third place was won by Dr Archan Naik of Murda-Navelim.

In the category for garden enthusiasts who grow plants wherever available, the first place was won by Sujay Naik of Ozrim Pernem, the second place was won by Marilia de Souza of Salisvaddo-Parra, and the third place was won by Ashley D’Costa of Uddo-Raia.

The Botanical Society promotes the cultivation of vegetables through insecticide-free and organic practices.

In the extensive vegetable garden category, the first place was won by Shivam Toroskar from Guirim while the second place was won by Kalindi Salgaokar of Bhatti-Parra

The prizes will be awarded to the winners during the upcoming Konkan Fruit Fest, to be held in May and organised by the Botanical Society of Goa with the Corporation of the City of Panaji and support of the Directorate of Agriculture, ICAR, other agencies, fruit growers, member institutions and the people of Goa.
