Fatorda Carnival in Goa has been cancelled

Goa Forward Party (GFP) chief and Fatorda legislator Vijai Sardesai on Thursday said he has been forced to cancel the four-day Fatorda Carnival, as the district authorities and the police have not given the required permissions for the event.

Addressing the media, Sardesai said he will now emphasise more on the traditional Carnival khells and added that he has asked khell tiatrists to write a play with title ‘Dev Uloita’.

“On behalf of the people of Fatorda and Margao, I tried my best for obtaining the permissions for this immensely popular, fully organised fest, but to no avail. This is a dark day considering the efforts of the common people. By denying the Carnival, the people’s efforts to promote the state’s art and culture have been killed,” Sardesai said.

Stating that the ‘big fat Fatorda Carnival blast’ was being held for the last 18 years without any grant from the government, Sardesai said, “We never asked for government funds for celebrating the Carnival here in Fatorda. Neither have we charged entry fee for the people. Some fear that the Margao Carnival will receive a poor response if Carnival is allowed in Fatorda.”
