The temple is located in the foothills of Kavlem village in Ponda taluka. It is one of the popular pilgrimage centres in Goa dedicated to Goddess Shree Shantadurga. The temple has rich history, the temple started as a small mud shrine which was later converted into temple in 1728 during the reign of Sahu Maharaja of Satara. Initially the temple was located in Cavelossim, due to the Portuguese invasion the idol of Shree Shantadurga was brought at Kavlem. The temple building is a fusion of Indo-Portuguese architecture.

The zatra of this temple is celebrated in the Magh (January-February) month of the Hindu calendar, at the time of Shuddh Panchami. Recently in the year 2016 the temple completed its 450 years of installation of the idol of Shree Shantadurga.
