The workshop will be an introduction to the breadth and length of comics culture in the world today. This talk will touch on comics as a medium and a form that ranges from newspaper strips to long format novels and everything in between. Not to forget the vast world of internet comics! It will talk about how image and text work to gather to create an expression that is unlike other art forms and how that can be used to one’s advantage in telling a story. A large part of the talk will be about the speakers own collection of comics (collected from various friends and art conventions) which comprises of zines, small anthologies and short form independent comics – a significant-emerging culture. This collection will be brought to the talk for participants to interact with and they can choose which to look at and talk about. One of the main aims will be to recognise comics as an independent form of literature and a powerful form of self expression which does not need permission, schooling or trained artistic skill to but rather, requires just having something (anything at all!) to say!
