The State Art Exhibition of Kala Academy in the Student Category will be held between 25th Feb to 1 st March 2019 at the Art Gallery, Kala Academy Complex, Panaji. Carnival float parades from March 2 onward
The annual four-day Carnival float parade will be held in Goa from March 2 to 5. The main float parade of the festival will be held in the capital city of Panaji on March 2 followed by parades in other towns across the state. The float parade will be held in Margao on March 3, Vasco and Ponda on March 4, while in Mapusa, Morjim and Curchorem, the float parades will be held on March 5. “We are promoting Carnival worldwide with fun and fervour; tourists should come to Goa to witness our unique culture. They are invited.khao piyo aur majja karo (eat drink and be merry),” said Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar while interacting with reporters in Panaji. He said that the department has prepared a budget of Rs 3 crore for the festival including Rs 1.5 crore for decoration and illumination of streets through which the Carnival parades will pass. He said that adequate security arrangements would be made for tourists arriving in the state for the Carnival festival. Earlier in the day, Ajgaonkar held a meeting with officials of the department to take stock of preparation for the festival.
Rajendra Talak directed thriller ‘Miranda House’ set to release in April
After a hiatus of five years, film director Rajendra Talak will be releasing his seventh film, a bilingual thriller–drama titled ‘Miranda House’ in the month of April. The film is produced by Rajendra Talak Creations in Konkani and Iris Production in Marathi. The film was shot entirely in Goa in the month of October over a span of 15 days. Briefing the media about the upcoming film, Talak said that the film has a large Goan cast and crew and over the shooting period also came to know about the Goan roots of Milind Gunaji. “I had to take a long break before this film as my priority was addressing the concerns of filmmakers in Goa, revamping the Film Finance Scheme, scheduling festivals and other works related to the film fraternity of Goa” added Talak. Putting forth their views actor, Milind Gunaji said that “It is the first time that I’m doing a film in Konkani. There is so much creativity in Goa and all that has been utilised for this film. ‘Ghumat’ soon to be declared as the heritage instrument of Goa: Gaude
Announcing that music percussion instrument– ghumat will soon be declared as the heritage instrument of Goa, minister for art and culture, Govind Gaude said that most of the work has been processed to declare ghumat with a relevant membrane as the state heritage instrument. He was speaking at the release of a special postal cover on ghumat at the valedictory function of the three-day GOAPEX 2019, Goa Philatelic exhibition at Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji. Gaude, further said that stamps and ghumat have been an integral part of his life. “Back then where there were no telephones or any mode of communication it was letters which we used to convey messages and that is when stamps would come to our rescue.” Quoting French statesmen, Napoleon Bonaparte, “Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. PETA urges people to go vegan
People for ethical treatment of animals (PETA), on Wednesday in the capital city, held an awareness drive in order to urge the people to go vegan. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, PETA– India member who was seen dressed as a valentine angel distributed red roses to couples and other passers-by. The Valentine angel held a signboard that read, “Have a Heart: Try Vegan”, encouraging everyone to show compassion towards animals by switching to healthy vegan eating. This campaign of PETA comes in a wake of the human lifestyle which is prone to various cardiovascular diseases due to the consumption of meat products. So by switching to vegan lifestyle people will experience important benefits, such as weight loss, increased energy levels, lowering your risk for multiple diseases, and living longer.
Kia Motors showcases ‘Carnival’ and ‘Niro’; to launch ‘SP2i’ in mid 2019
Kia Motors are all set to launch its mid-Sports Utility Vehicle SP2i this year under its plan to be ranked among the top five automobile manufacturers in the country in three years. Kia is planning to expand its portfolio by launching a new car every six months in India. On Thursday, Kia Motors showcased its two products, ‘Carnival’ and ‘Niro’ in the capital city at the Panjim Gymkhana. Kia SP2i is to be launched in India during the second half of 2019. It will be equipped with power-packed performance and world-class quality. Earlier at the Auto Expo 2018, Kia Motors made its debut in India and showcased its 16 top global line-ups along with the ‘SP2i’ concept vehicle. The SP Concept-based SUV will be in contention against Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks, and the recently launched Tata Harrier, in the Indian market. While Carnival MPV will be set for a launch in the Indian market in early 2020. Celebrating the life of St Ketevan
The Ketevan World Sacred Music Festival, which will be held from February 21 across places in Old Goa, combines sacred music traditions from different eras from the East and the West inspired by the life of St Ketevan, Queen of Georgia. The relics of St Ketevan were brought from the Middle East to Old Goa, which were found a few years ago after being buried for almost 400 years. The Ketevan world Sacred Music Festival is a project of music and religious coexistence, connecting and fostering dialogue among cultures. Ketevan Sacred Music Festival offers concerts, workshops and conferences with artists from several traditions around the world: Western Classical, Carnatic, Orthodox Christian, Catholic, Sufi, Hindustani, Jewish, Native and many others. Phoenix Art Exhibition- Colours, textures, and dimensions
Museum of Goa is currently having an art exhibition titled is ‘Phoenix’. Three reputed artists – Genie Poretzky Lee, Sweety Joshi, and Sanjay Sawant- are the ones responsible for the creative works displayed. The artists are from different backgrounds and they have their own unique style. Genie Poretzky Lee’s works have been exhibited around the world. She has a decade of experience as a textile artist. Sweeti Joshi is a well-known abstract artist. She loves the pitch black colour of kohl. She has used black thread to create a trail in her art. The black frill edges are achieved through her brush that is fire. Sanjay Sawant uses textures that may be of cardboard which adds a new dimension to the painting. He graduated with a first class rank from J J School of Art, Mumbai. The final artistic treat of the Phoenix exhibition is a collaborative artwork by all the 3 artists. Evolving/ Eroding exhibition- Exploring Nature
Evolving/ Eroding- a collaborative exhibition by Indian and Danish photographers was inaugurated at Museum of Goa in the presence of Thomas Sehested, Director of The Danish Cultural Institute in India. The photographers have used photographic techniques to explore the concept of nature. Goa is one of the inspirations for their works. The photos are distorted and staged which shows the evolving and eroding characteristics of nature. Here’s a deeper look into the photographers’ works: Amit Sheokand showed the skeleton structure of local Goan fish like Shekta, Waghole, Bangda, Ambattan Parra, Tilapia, and Sagoti. Akshay Mahajan had seen in houses of Goa the framed pictures of family members who have passed away. He combined these portraits with local fauna in light of the superstition that – trees are totems for dead ancestors. Jagrut Raval used cyanotype with drawing on handmade cotton archival paper. The inspiration for these works comes from the conceptual architect, Lebbeus Wood. Miriam Nielsen works on paper and aluminium. They are based on photographs of landscapes, structures and urban spaces seen in Goa and Europe. The works can be placed on walls and floors. Laura Faurschou, artist, helped in some of them. ‘Yeh Shaam Mastaani’- Panjim Youth Club’s upcoming musical programme
Panjim Youth Club in association with the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Goa, will be organizing a music and dance cultural programme called ‘Yeh Shaam Mastaani’. It will take place at the DMK hall of Kala Academy, Panaji, on 23rd February 2019 (5 pm onwards). There are going to be live performances by prominent artistes like Ali Hussain, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Golden Voice Hunt singer, along with some of Goa’s best singers who are Gautami Hede Bambolkar, Samruddha Chodankar, Viraj Verekar, Vibha Algundgi, Chirag Tripathi, Sagar Naik, and Sneha Nagarsenkar. The winners of All India Salsa & Bachata Dance Championship- Amit and Sakshi- will be performing live as well. Mr Govind Gaude, Minister for Art and Culture, will be the chief guest while Mr Sidharth Kuncalienker, Vice-chairman-GIDC, and Mr Jayesh Salgaonkar, Minister for housing, shall be the guests of honour. ‘Chitrakur’ to be held at Institute Menezes Braganza
Over the years Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji has been organising number of art and cultural programmes with quite a few geared towards showcasing the talent of students from schools and colleges. In keeping with this, the institute together with the All Goa Art Masters Association and Goa College of Art, Altinho will be organising the seventh edition of the ‘Chitrakur’ workshop which is all about live portrait painting. The workshop which will be held from February 20 to February 22 will see students of Goa College of Art, Altinho, sketching and painting the portraits of 20 noted personalities from Goa, live. The resource person for the workshop will be artist Devdatta Padekar, who is acquainted with modern techniques and has traveled to places like France, Russia, etc. Some of the personalities will also deliver talks on various topics related to the arts. The finished works will then be on display at the institute along with works from a few other artists.
