2nd edition of AWES Cup to kick off on Aug 28
Indian Super League (ISL) semifinalists FC Pune City will be the big attraction for Goan football lovers at the second edition of the AWES Cup, organised by Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons (AWES) in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) and Dempo Sports Club (Juniors), at Tilak Maidan, Vasco. The tournament kicks off on Tuesday, August 28 with a high-octane clash between defending champions Dempo Sports Club and FC Goa. Explore Crystals at the Goa Science Centre
The Goa Science Centre is currently holding an exhibition called ‘The Wonderful World of Crystals’. It was inaugurated by Dr Ramesh Pai (H.O.D of Goa University’s Physics Department) on August 24, 2018. To begin with, there were different naturally occurring crystals on display such as rock salt, calcite, quartz, etc. They even had a 3D short film to showcase the use of liquid crystal display. The walls were full of information on various topics like gems, ‘Why do diamonds glitter?’, the use of crystals in photography, and more. A couple of interactive exhibits made it more appealing. There were different screens where one could answer a quiz or play a ‘Tessellation’ game. All this and more can be viewed at the Goa Science Centre till 30th September 2018.

European Union Film Festival concludes with ‘A Wedding’
The European Union Film Festival that had started on August 19 concluded on August 31 with the film ‘A Wedding’ (Luxembourg). Actress Neena Kulkarni, who acted in the film was present for the screening. The 23rd edition of the festival was organized by the delegation of the European Union, was brought to the state by the Cinephile Film Club of Entertainment Society of Goa and has become an annual feature in the last few years. It was bouquet of 24 contemporary and award-winning European films from various countries like Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Lithuania, Croatia and Sweden. This year, the festival screened movies from varied genres ranging from comedy to gripping family drama, romance, and adventure, bringing some intriguing stories for all cinema enthusiasts.

“People will not be motivated to protect nature and its assets until and unless they realise what services the ecosystem has to offers and in order to know that they have to understand and appreciate nature and its offerings,” said Governor of Goa, Mridula Sinha, while speaking at the inauguration of Goa Environment Festival at Kala Academy. She further added that whenever we travel by train or car we see swaying fields and huge water bodies that gives our mind a sense of serenity, but often we fail to appreciate its beauty. “The appreciation of nature is never taught to us but it comes naturally as the aesthetics, respect, caring for the earth and interrelationships are the things that bind a person with nature,” she said. Art is not just about Watercolours- Scapes Art Exhibition at MOG
It is not every day that a person gets to see artworks created by using unusual materials like insect wings, sawdust, burnt paper, and tea. The Museum of Goa is currently holding an art exhibition called ‘Scapes’ where one can view these unique abstract works. The artist behind them is none other than Siddarth Kerkar. He has loved art since childhood and likes to experiment with different materials. The artworks carry a minimalistic style and have different textures. Make Cities Equitable- Burdett
The third edition of Z-Axis – the biennial conference titled- “Designing Equitable Cities”, organised by the Charles Correa Foundation was inaugurated on September 6 at the Kala Academy. Professor of Urban studies at London School of Economics (LSE), Richard Burdett delivered the Charles Correa Memorial Lecture, where he spoke on how to shape equitable cities in an urban age. Burdett started the lecture by emphasising the need for an equitable environment in which the city of an urban age can flourish. “Shaping Cities in the Urban Age does more than put cities on the map. The current urban trends are making cities more fragmented, less equitable and environmentally more damaging.” He also argued powerfully towards an integrated social environment that can inform and inspire city-makers that are shaping an increasingly urban world. Quoting Charles Correa, “We should improve fundamentally the governance of our cities – for, in the final analysis, they will decide the future of this nation” Burdett highlighted that the city belongs to the citizens. Cases of breast cancer on a rise in Goa
At the ongoing two-day 7th edition of the Indian Breast Cancer Survivors Conference at International Centre of Goa, president of GOKARMA Oncology Association, Shekhar Salkar said that breast cancer cases are on a rise in Goa. Out of the 1000-1200 cancer cases reported every year in Goa around 200 are of breast cancer, he said. Minister for Art and Culture, Govind Gaude said that there is a need to make an effort to promote the art of filmmaking in Goa. He was speaking during the release of promotional songs of upcoming Konkani movie ‘Questao De Confusao’ at the Directorate of Art and Culture, Panaji. He said that the artistes of the film were earlier involved with theatre and have now moved to filmmaking; this not only shows their love for art but also their passion. “Though we may not have enough finance to make a film but Goans are rich in creativity. Films like these are a way to promote and showcase our creative side. This film is not only for entertainment purpose but is also an initiative to give people a different outlook towards life,” added Gaude. A total of four promotional songs of the film were released. The 14th edition of Pt Jitendra Abhisheki Music Festival which is organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of Pt Jitendra Abhisheki will be held on September 29 and September 30 at Kala Academy, Panaji. The music festival will feature sixteen artistes who will be performing for the 2- day event.
