Explore the world through Nuno Lobito’s lens
Fundação Oriente, Panaji, is currently holding a photography exhibition called ‘Ties| More than Travelling’. The photographer behind these creative works is Nuno Lobito. He has travelled to approximately 204 countries and loves taking pictures of what he sees on his journeys. He prefers shooting people over other objects as they give him feelings. Lobito likes the fact that his photos give others a glimpse of different cultures and how people around the world live their daily lives. The exhibition contains 16 photos from Lobito’s travels. The photos capture various emotions and activities of people around the world. The pictures have titles like ‘Tenderness’, ‘Throwing a net’, ‘Intimacy between a child and his pet’, ‘Uneasiness’, and ‘Family meeting’. Different places are featured in them. These include Bahrain, Somalia, Portugal, Brazil, Chile, Iran, Madagascar, and more. (The exhibition will be open for public viewing till October 27, 2018)
Registrations for 49th edition of IFFI gets underway
The delegate registrations for the 49th edition of IFFI will commence on October 8 from 7.00 p.m. onwards for all cine enthusiasts and professionals on payment of Rs. 1000, whereas the students will be registered free. The applications of the delegates who are registered with IFFI for the last 2 years will be approved within 24 hours and new applications will be approved within 48hours. While briefing the media about the preparations of the festival, vice–chairman of ESG, Rajendra Talak said that: “all our activities are going as per the schedule and this being my second term as the vice–chairman of ESG; I can say that we are much ahead of the schedule. The entire programme will be finalised by October 30.” There will also be a Goan section for the unreleased Goan films in this edition of IFFI, added Talak. Toll free number launched for postal complaints, suggestions
The department of posts, on Tuesday, launched a toll-free number which can be used to convey any suggestions and complaints regarding services. The department launched the toll-free number-18003136633 as part of National Postal Week that is observed from October 9-15. Pramod Sawant, Speaker of Legislative Assembly, launched the postal celebrations. He said that the postal sector is seeing changes day by day. “Most of the schemes that are launched by the government are not fully accessible to all the public, so in order to promote schemes such as Atal Pension Yojana and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana it is not only the duty of the postal department but also all the government departments that are directly related to the public to spread awareness,” he said. Only about 250 residents of the state have availed of the Atal Pension Yojana scheme launched by the central government in 2015, revealed officials from the postal department. Goa gets it’s first pictorial cancellation
The department of posts, on the occasion of National Philately Day, launched the first pictorial cancellation of Goa which will feature the sculpture of Saint Meerabai, which is found in the village of Loutolim. The department launched this pictorial cancellation as part of National Postal Week that is being observed from October 9-15. The sculpture of Saint Meerabai, which can be seen in the village of Loutolim, is the work of sculpturist, Mahendra Alvares. The sculpture has entered six record books, including Limca book of records for being the fastest and longest laterite sculpture done single-handedly. This pictorial cancellation will be used at the Loutolim post office, to cancel the letters posted in a specified letterbox. Dr N Vinodkumar, postmaster general, Goa region, said that: “stamps maybe a piece of paper for a common man, but for a philatelist it is a piece of art, cause these stamps are studded with miniature paintings based on various themes.” Vinodkumar also urged the younger generation to take up philately and open ‘Philatelic Deposit Account’, which will not only add a dimension to one’s hobby but also will enhance them with more knowledge. Artworks of differently-abled students will be put on display at Panaji
A painting exhibition called ‘Kala Chaitanya’ will be organised by the Lokvishwas Pratishthan NGO in collaboration with Institute Menezes Braganza and Giants Group of Panaji. It will be held at Institute Menezes Braganza from 19th to 21st October 2018 (10 am to 6:30 pm). The paintings are done by differently-abled students who are educated in schools run by the Lokvishwas Pratishthan NGO. The NGO trains their students in different fields like drama, dance, art, etc. The exhibition will display over 90 paintings by these talented young artists.
Admire the French Coastline through Maia Flore’s photos
Alliance Française in association with Atout France is currently having a photography exhibition- Imagine France by the Sea. The French photographer, Maia Flore, is the person behind these stunning works. She adventurously explored the Eastern and Western part of the French coast covering areas like Cannes, France station Nautique, Cabourg, Leucate, and Calvi. Some of the photos have a minimalistic style where she blends with the background in clever ways. (The exhibition at Alliance Française is open for public viewing till 23rd October 2018.)

The students belonging to the schools of the Lokvishwas Pratishthan NGO proved that having a disability isn’t a disadvantage. Their positive attitude is an inspiration to the world. Their enthusiasm for life and their talent is reflected in the paintings they created which are currently being displayed at Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji. The brilliant artworks revolve around different subjects such as still life, nature, deities, flowers, abstract art, and sceneries. Mandira Faldesai awarded IGS gold medal for topping ME exam
Mandira Mahablu Faldesai, a civil engineering student of Goa Engineering College, has been awarded Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) Gold Medal for topping ME foundation engineering examination, conducted by the Goa University. Mandira was handed over a certificate and the gold medal at the hands of Dr Luiz de Mello (partner and technical director, Vector Projects, Brazil) and Prof G L Shivkumar Babu (Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru), who is also the president of Indian Geotechnical Society at the annual flagship event – 2nd Victor de Mello Goa Lecture and Symposium on Women in Geotechnics, organised by Goa Engineering College (GEC) in association with IGS Goa Chapter, recently. Mandira passed out with distinction, and did a dissertation on ‘Monitoring Control and Mapping of Landslides in Goa.’She worked on live problems of slope stability issues in Goa. While appreciating the positive policies implemented by the department of civil engineering, Mandira has credited her success to the sincere efforts taken by teachers and her guide Dr Purnanand P Savoikar.
