In a bid to promote Goan folk dance and music, the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Goa and Shree Nagesh Maharudra Bhajani Mandal, Curca will organise a musical dance performance of Goan folk dance music and songs by Saraswati Kala Mandal, Kelbai, Curti Ponda, on July 1 at 7 p.m. at Shree Nagesh Maharudra Bhajani Mandal, Curca.
Saraswati Kala Mandal a Goan folk group from Curti, Ponda who have presented their performance not only in various parts of Goa but also at different festivals organised by West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur, and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India in the various states of the country. And now under the ICCR they have taken the initiative to organise performances of Goan folk dance, music and songs at different rural areas in order to promote Goan folk art.

The tenth edition of the Semana da Cultura Indo Portuguesa (Goa) was inaugurated on September 29 with Minister of Revenue and IT, Rohan Khaunte, Minister for Environment of Portugal, Joao Pedro De Matos Fernandes, Consul General of Portugal in Goa Antônio Chrystello Tavares and executive committee members of the Semana da Cultura in attendance. Explore the world through Nuno Lobito’s lens
Fundação Oriente, Panaji, is currently holding a photography exhibition called ‘Ties| More than Travelling’. The photographer behind these creative works is Nuno Lobito. He has travelled to approximately 204 countries and loves taking pictures of what he sees on his journeys. He prefers shooting people over other objects as they give him feelings. Lobito likes the fact that his photos give others a glimpse of different cultures and how people around the world live their daily lives. The exhibition contains 16 photos from Lobito’s travels. The photos capture various emotions and activities of people around the world. The pictures have titles like ‘Tenderness’, ‘Throwing a net’, ‘Intimacy between a child and his pet’, ‘Uneasiness’, and ‘Family meeting’. Different places are featured in them. These include Bahrain, Somalia, Portugal, Brazil, Chile, Iran, Madagascar, and more. (The exhibition will be open for public viewing till October 27, 2018)
Registrations for 49th edition of IFFI gets underway
The delegate registrations for the 49th edition of IFFI will commence on October 8 from 7.00 p.m. onwards for all cine enthusiasts and professionals on payment of Rs. 1000, whereas the students will be registered free. The applications of the delegates who are registered with IFFI for the last 2 years will be approved within 24 hours and new applications will be approved within 48hours. While briefing the media about the preparations of the festival, vice–chairman of ESG, Rajendra Talak said that: “all our activities are going as per the schedule and this being my second term as the vice–chairman of ESG; I can say that we are much ahead of the schedule. Toll free number launched for postal complaints, suggestions
The department of posts, on Tuesday, launched a toll-free number which can be used to convey any suggestions and complaints regarding services. The department launched the toll-free number-18003136633 as part of National Postal Week that is observed from October 9-15. Pramod Sawant, Speaker of Legislative Assembly, launched the postal celebrations. He said that the postal sector is seeing changes day by day. “Most of the schemes that are launched by the government are not fully accessible to all the public, so in order to promote schemes such as Atal Pension Yojana and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana it is not only the duty of the postal department but also all the government departments that are directly related to the public to spread awareness,” he said. Only about 250 residents of the state have availed of the Atal Pension Yojana scheme launched by the central government in 2015, revealed officials from the postal department. Goa gets it’s first pictorial cancellation
The department of posts, on the occasion of National Philately Day, launched the first pictorial cancellation of Goa which will feature the sculpture of Saint Meerabai, which is found in the village of Loutolim. The department launched this pictorial cancellation as part of National Postal Week that is being observed from October 9-15. The sculpture of Saint Meerabai, which can be seen in the village of Loutolim, is the work of sculpturist, Mahendra Alvares. The sculpture has entered six record books, including Limca book of records for being the fastest and longest laterite sculpture done single-handedly. This pictorial cancellation will be used at the Loutolim post office, to cancel the letters posted in a specified letterbox. Dr N Vinodkumar, postmaster general, Goa region, said that: “stamps maybe a piece of paper for a common man, but for a philatelist it is a piece of art, cause these stamps are studded with miniature paintings based on various themes.” Vinodkumar also urged the younger generation to take up philately and open ‘Philatelic Deposit Account’, which will not only add a dimension to one’s hobby but also will enhance them with more knowledge. Artworks of differently-abled students will be put on display at Panaji
A painting exhibition called ‘Kala Chaitanya’ will be organised by the Lokvishwas Pratishthan NGO in collaboration with Institute Menezes Braganza and Giants Group of Panaji. It will be held at Institute Menezes Braganza from 19th to 21st October 2018 (10 am to 6:30 pm). The paintings are done by differently-abled students who are educated in schools run by the Lokvishwas Pratishthan NGO. The NGO trains their students in different fields like drama, dance, art, etc. The exhibition will display over 90 paintings by these talented young artists.
Admire the French Coastline through Maia Flore’s photos
Alliance Française in association with Atout France is currently having a photography exhibition- Imagine France by the Sea. The French photographer, Maia Flore, is the person behind these stunning works. She adventurously explored the Eastern and Western part of the French coast covering areas like Cannes, France station Nautique, Cabourg, Leucate, and Calvi. Mandira Faldesai awarded IGS gold medal for topping ME exam
Mandira Mahablu Faldesai, a civil engineering student of Goa Engineering College, has been awarded Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) Gold Medal for topping ME foundation engineering examination, conducted by the Goa University. Mandira was handed over a certificate and the gold medal at the hands of Dr Luiz de Mello (partner and technical director, Vector Projects, Brazil) and Prof G L Shivkumar Babu (Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru), who is also the president of Indian Geotechnical Society at the annual flagship event – 2nd Victor de Mello Goa Lecture and Symposium on Women in Geotechnics, organised by Goa Engineering College (GEC) in association with IGS Goa Chapter, recently. Mandira passed out with distinction, and did a dissertation on ‘Monitoring Control and Mapping of Landslides in Goa.’She worked on live problems of slope stability issues in Goa. While appreciating the positive policies implemented by the department of civil engineering, Mandira has credited her success to the sincere efforts taken by teachers and her guide Dr Purnanand P Savoikar.

‘Breaking the Glass’ at management event- Odyssey 2018
One of the biggest management events of Goa- Odyssey 2018- took place at Kala Academy on 10th and 11th October. It was organised by the BBA department of Saraswat Vidyalaya’s Sridora Caculo College of Commerce and Management Studies. There are many barriers that women in India face which is metaphorically known as a ‘glass ceiling’. This inspired the theme for this year- ‘Breaking the Glass’. Various rounds in different business areas such as Human Resources, Marketing, and Finance kept the participants on their toes. Additionally, there were challenges which revolved around women. These included tasks like creating HR policies and finance schemes beneficial for female entrepreneurs. KLE Cbalc Belgaum won the first place of Odyssey 2018.
Cultural marks to be introduced by 2019-20
On Monday, minister for art and culture, Govind Gaude said that the drafting of the cultural policy is underway and the final changes in the amendment will be done by the end of next week. “After these changes are done, it will be scrutinized by a selection team which will then approach the Directorate of education. After getting the nod from Directorate of education, the policy will await the approval of the cabinet and the cultural marks can only be introduced by 2019-20 academic year”, added Gaude.
Kala Academy to undergo expansion
Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference, minister for art and culture, Govind Gaude said that, the Kala academy will be undergoing an expansion process which will feature two auditoriums of 300 and 600 seating capacity in the premises of the Kala Academy. “The project of the 600 seating capacity auditorium will be done on priority basis and will be constructed in the parking lot of the academy. A tender will be floated for a consultant by the end of next week and the consultant will estimate the budget for the project within a time period of one month”, added Gaude.

The 38th edition of the Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar festival organised by Kala Academy Goa will be inaugurated at Dinanath Mangeshkar auditorium at 5.45 p.m. by minister for art and culture, Govind Gaude on November 2. The festival will be held on November 2, 3 and 4 and will see the participation of top vocalists and instrumentalists of India. Prior to the inaugural function, the, curtain raiser event of the festival, a Symposium on the topic ‘Indian Classical Music And Its Aesthetics’ will be held between 10.30 a.m to 1.30 p.m. on November 2 at the Black Box in which speakers and experts of music namely Pt. Ribhav gets call-up for India U-19 football team
Salgaocar FC Midfielder, Ribhav Sardesai has been selected for the India U-19 Football National team and is the only Goan in the national team. Ribhav, who is studying in the first year of the BBA course at MES College, Zuarinagar, recently represented the country in the four-nation U- 19 international football tournament held in Croatia. Post the four-nation tournament the team traveled for an exposure trip to Serbia in the month of September. In 2013, Ribhav donned the Indian national colors when he represented India U-14 for the AFC qualifiers, in Mashaad, Iran. In 2015, he represented India U-16 for the SAAF Cup (where India emerged runners-up) in Sylhet, Bangladesh. He also represented Goa in 2012 at the National Football festival organized by AIFF in Kalyani, West Bengal and in 2015 he represented Goa at the National School Games, Telangana where they emerged Champions.
‘Wrong Number’ to be staged at Kala Academy
A comedy play ‘Wrong Number’ directed by the film, theatre, and television director Raman Kumar will be staged today at Kala Academy at 6 p.m. The play features Bollywood and Television actors, Rakesh Bedi, Tanaaz Irani, Delnaaz Irani, Avtar Gill, Kishwar Merchant, Rajesh Puri, and Rahul Bhuchar.
