This MOG SUNDAY, MOG is engaging Tridip Suhrud and Vinay Lal in a conversation, on the topic – Gandhi and India’s Civilisational Futures. Brief: Even as India is poised to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi, revered in principle as the architect of Indian independence, various constituencies have subjected him to withering critique. It is perhaps apposite that the assault on Gandhi coincides with lynchings of Muslims and Dalits and the suppression of fundamental freedoms as much as the strident assertion of Hindu identity and masculinity. The civilisational futures of India and non-violence are perhaps more inextricably intertwined than we have thus far recognized. Tridip Suhrud and Vinay  Lal will engage in a conversation on some key aspects of Gandhi’s thought, the particular manner in which his ideas have travelled across widely diverging communities, the future of nonviolence, the possibilities inherent in literal and cultural translations of  Gandhi, and the fear of Gandhi in his native Gujarat as much as in other Indian communities which have vigorously sought to disavow a world-historical figure. Suhrud is a writer, translator and was the director, chief editor of the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust from 2012-17. Vinay Lal is a […]

Sunaparanta – Goa Centre for the Arts is delighted to present ‘Ordinary Superheroes: Tales from the Animan Kingdom’, a solo show by Goa-based artist Viraj Naik opening on Friday, 23rd August 2019, 7 pm.  With curatorial direction by Leandre D’Souza, the show is produced by patrons Dipti and Dattaraj Salgaocar. Ordinary Superheroes is a collection of over 95 ink drawings, etchings and sculptures of hybridized subjects, part of Naik’s long-term study of the physiognomy and behaviour of human beings. The exhibition features an evolutionary archive of the human portrait, illustrated as mutilations – where men are disfigured into beasts, monsters and grotesque creatures. Naik’s human-arium is presented as a suspended place, where man metamorphizes into anthropomorphic state/s.
