Brief on the talk: The French philosopher Gaston Bachelard writes: ‘The world is my imagination. The cleverer I am at miniaturising the world, the better I am at possessing it.’ Miniaturising objects has been part of human cultures for millennia and objects are made for various purposes that often consist of a mixture of religion, entertainment and craft. The lecture will explore the research and work into miniature of Dr Catja de Haas. For her PhD by Design Catja used miniature and the 17th-century Dutch dolls’ house as the basis for the design of a series of miniature components with which one could make a 21st-century dolls’ house. About the speaker: Catja is the founder and director of Catja de Haas Architects based in London. Catja completed her PhD by design at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, in 2013 and holds an MA in housing and Urbanism from the Architectural Association in London.
